Josep Termes i el catalanisme popular

Abstract

Josep Termes va morir el 9 de setembre de 2011. Tenia setanta- cinc anys. Era l’historiador social català més important de la postguerra. Tot i que ell deia que no ho era, la historiografi a el compta com un dels deixebles directes o indirectes de Jaume Vicens Vives. No obstant això, Termes va decantar- se, al mateix moment que també ho feren Casimir Martí, Albert Balcells i Miquel Izard, per indagar sobre la història social i obrera catalanes. Segurament ho va fer perquè refusava, com va escriure Tzvetan Todorov referint-se a Raymond Aron, la ruptura entre viure i pensar que va seduir a molts intel·lectuals del segle XX. Josep Termes, que va començar els estudis de farmàcia i no els va acabar, es va convertir en historiador empès per l’experiència vital. Va ser al seu barri, al Camp d’en Grassot, on va descobrir l’obrerisme i el catalanisme que després es convertiren en el centre de les seves investigacions acadèmiques. Per a ell, doncs, els dos principals moviments de la contemporaneïtat catalana —catalanisme i obrerisme— no eren tan sols uns fenòmens que calia estudiar. Eren més que això. Defi nien la seva vida i van proporcionarli una agudíssima intuïció historiogràfi ca. Els seus pares eren de família pagesa pobra —de la Segarra i de la Terra Alta, concretament—, emigrats a Barcelona als anys vint, sense estudis de cap mena. En el barri de la vil·la Gràcia on va néixer el 27 de juliol de 1936 i on va viure tota la vida, a prop de la taverna que regentaven els seus pares, va aprendre a observar la realitat. Ell va ser el primer membre de la seva família que va anar a l’escola i posteriorment a la universitat, però se sentia orgullós dels seus orígens. De vegades fèiem broma i, entre rialles i converses sobre futbol, sobre el Barça, una altra de les seves grans passions, li deia que era un «xava de barri» esdevingut catedràtic.
