[spa] En la antigüedad, la belleza se concebía fundamentalmente como aquello armónico, ordenado e infinito. Durante el s. XVII, dicha definición de belleza es cuestionada, y comienzan a desarrollarse nuevas formas de definirla. Es a partir de estas nuevas formas de entender la belleza que se comenzará a estudiar aquello que originariamente había sido opuesto a lo bello: lo terrible, lo grandioso que nos causa espanto; lo sublime. La idea de lo sublime será partícipe y punto de inicio en el posterior desarrollo de una nueva categoría que también nos hablará de horrores bellos: lo siniestro, límite y condición de la belleza. Lo sublime y lo siniestro, categorías que aquí será exploradas tanto a nivel teórico como en su incidencia a la hora de conceptualizar y elaborar un proyecto fotográfico, han sido un motor durante décadas en el arte para dejar nacer las pulsiones más ocultas del ser humano: su relación con la práctica fotográfica moderna y contemporánea ha hecho que haya funcionado como el pilar sobre el cual se ha sostenido el trabajo de grandes fotógrafos y artistas, y sobre el cual poder inspirarse en la actualidad para llevar a cabo nuevos proyectos fotográficos.

[eng] From ancient times, beauty has been conceived as harmony, order, and infinitude. During the XVII century, said definition of beauty begins to be questioned, and new theories and studies on beauty start to surface. It is due to these new ways of seeing and understanding beauty that great thinkers start to build an interest in what had originally been opposed to the concept of beauty: the terrible, the greatness that surpasses our being, the sublime. The concept of the sublime will be part and a starting point in the subsequent development of a new aesthetics category that will, as well, show us the beauty in the dark: the sinister, limit and condition of beauty. Both the sublime and the sinister, categories which will be studied here thoroughly, have been a crucial motor within decades for artists to let their darkest instincts and drives run free: the close relationship these two concepts hold with modern photography has made them a very valuable cornerstone on which the work of great artists and photographers has been able to sustain itself, and also a path for new projects to take a start point and nourish the conceptual framework of the artist.
