El problema de la uniformització de corbes fou estudiat a bastament per B. Riemann (1826-1866), F. Klein (1849-1925), H. Poincaré (1854-1912) i P. Koebe (1882-1945). En les primeres dècades del segle xx, aquests autors obtingueren el teorema l'uniformització, segons el qual tota corba algebraica definida sobre el cos C dels nombres complexos admet una parametrització global mitjançant funcions d'una variable complexa. Es tracta de funcions univalorades que, a l'època, s'anomenaven funcions uniformes. Malgrat l'atenció dedicada a aquest problema durant més d'un segle, per a molt poques corbes se'n coneix una uniformització explícita.
