Il mito di Arianna

Abstract

The myth of Ariadne is so famous as to become familiar. Her silhouette traverses the ruins of mythological gigantisms: figures that have hypertrophically colonised the imaginary of Western culture; she stands among the cyclopean statues of her father Minos, her brother Minotaur and the prison, the labyrinth, in which he was imprisoned. However, even if she moves lightly in the cone of light of this famous world, Ariadne is woven into the shadows and when she grabs her robe she is ready to escape, denying herself to interpretation. She was, in her motherland, a goddess of the labyrinth and saw her peers move in circles, following a mysterious choreography invented by Daedalus. She loved Theseus madly, without ever really being reciprocated. She chose to betray her family, to leave her homeland behind, to board an Athenian ship hoping one day to become Queen of Athens. She died, instead, on the shore of the sea of Naxos, after the abandonment. She died in childbirth in Cyprus. She turned into a statue on the plain of Argos, after meeting the petrifying gaze of the gorgon Medusa. The god Dionysus finally chose her as his companion and gave her a new life among the stars. Many different fates, sometimes even discordant, for one of the most famous characters in ancient mythology.
