Abstract

Per l’ecologia nativa hawaiana, ogni espressione della natura – il collettivo non umano costituito dall’atmosfera e dai suoi agenti, dall’acqua e dalla terra, dalle piante, dagli animali e dagli spiriti dei luoghi – è animata e consapevole, dunque capace di interagire con sé stessa e con il collettivo umano. Questa trama di connessioni e interdipendenze è il motivo per cui in hawaiano non c’è un termine equivalente a quello occidentale di «natura»: l’umano e il non umano non sono separati e contrapposti come nella concezione occidentale, ma si combinano per formare un’unica famiglia, quella del vivente. All’interno di questo paradigma culturale, Borgnino esplora, in una prospettiva al contempo etnografica e storica, le forme di responsabilità ecologica espresse dalla cultura indigena hawaiana, con la sua vocazione alla reciprocità segnatamente insulare. Ed è proprio questa visione del mondo che ci viene veicolata dalle ecologie native: un pianeta-isola circondato dallo spazio cosmico in cui il benessere individuale e collettivo dipende strettamente da una propensione alla cooperazione non solo tra umani ma anche tra umano e non umano.
