Abstract

[Abstract] On the European coasts there are five bivalves of the genus Donax (Family Donacidae) with similar morphology of which only one, D. trunculus, is commercially exploited. In this work, a genetic analysis of two samples of Donax from the Atlantic coast of Iberian Peninsula was carried to provide useful data for the conservation and management. Two molecular markers based on the 5S rDNA and the mitochondrial COI gene was used to confirm that the samples under study correspond to D. vittatus. A population analysis based on COI gene was also undertaken. The results obtained with this marker indicated that both samples of D. vittatus show a high genetic diversity, with values higher than that reported in other commercially exploited bivalves with the same geographical distribution. Evidences of population differentiation were not found and the inferred demographic history corresponds to a scenario of population expansion.
