[Abstract] This work aims to ascertain the knowledge students of primary third cycle and secondary first cycle have about different material systems and how the textbooks promote their proper characterization and differentiation. The results show that students participating in the study have a narrow conception of mixture, very focused on what they perceive, which excludes products that are naturally mixed. However, the students have more academic knowledge regarding the distinction between simple and compound substances. Moreover, the texts normally employed show some deficiencies that could explain the ideas of students. Specifically texts do not deal at the same level the different types of material systems. Thus, in primary and secondary are studying the mixtures phenomenological and macroscopic level, while the simple and compound substances are explained in secondary, using the macroscopic explanatory level.
