Articolo sull'opera del fotografo americano di orgine cubana Abelardo Morell. Per le sue fotografie di interni di architettura Morell utilizza una tecnica analogica che deriva direttamente dagli esperimenti ottici rinascimentali che Leonardo da Vinci denominò Camera Obscura e che utilizza un fenomeno, quello della rifrazione della luce, peraltro noto fin dai tempi di Aristotele. Morell con le sue fotografie sembra trasporre in immagini le osservazioni di Walter Benjamin sul flaneur. Fondendo esterno ed interno delle architetture, Morell fornisce agli architetti la suggestiva prova visiva, tangibile, concreta, di un compiuto raggiungimento di un equilibrio tra Locus e opera d'Architettura. Stranamente le foto di Morell richiamano alla memoria le stanze con precipizio di cui Rossi parlava nell'Autobiografia Scientifica. O forse in un impossibile -ma senza dubbio suggestivo- paragone la coincidenza fra stanza e città che Rossi disegna a mano sul collage della Città Analoga. Dove cardo e decumano e infisso cruciforme della finestra possono essere medesima cosa in un interno le cui pareti sono piante di città. Morell ci ricorda dunque che lo sguardo, può essere ancora un rito di fondazione. Una possibilità magica di misurare il non-misurabile. This article is dedicated to the work of Abelardo Morell, an American photographer born in Cuba in 1948 and emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1962. Morell's dreamlike photography is mostly focused on the exploration of architecture interiors, entirely deprived of the presence of human beings, and shot using an old analogic technique derived both from Leonardo Da Vinci's optical experiments and from the study of the refrection of light phenomena already known to Aristotle. Morell's enigmatic vision could be easily seen as the perfect visual comment for the pages Walter Benjamin wrote about the flâneur and the flânerie in his notorious “Passagenwerk”. In blurring the boundaries between interior spaces and outer landscapes Morell suggests that we, architects, have to reach a similar balance between locus and architecture design. Like flâneurs, each room we design contains the image and the character of the specific place as well the place itself may literally be mirrored in the environments we envision. A surrealistic process which unexpectedly leads Morell to find another possible reference in Aldo Rossi's “room with a cliff”, the architectural paradox described in his “Scientific autobiography”. No need to say that another famous Aldo Rossi's notorious image is perfectly matching Abelardo Morell's work: the “Analogous city” collage where the cross of the window frame is superimposed over the intersection formed by the cardo and the decumanus maximus of the Roman city plan that forms the wall of that room interior drawing. Morell's body of work is precious because it makes possibile such Borgesian -impossible- reference game. His photographs, like mirrors, reflects different images, different meanings and one message. The act of seeing could still be a ritual one. A possibility to measure the unmeasurable.
