Abstract

Tozzi's love letters to his fiancée and the «cifre del comico e della confessione» of the immoralist Palazzeschi, the central role of Ungaretti in the context of twentieth century poetry and the many faceted Curzio Malaparte, director of the historiographically important review «Prospettive»; and again, the poetry of Luzi and Caproni, that of Gatto, Sereni and Parronchi, Cattafi and Raboni, but also the narrative of Gianna Manzini and the critical teachings of Luigi Baldacci. These, and others as well - from Carifi to Trinci, from Mariella Bettarini to Ugo Riccarelli – are the personalities of a century of Italian literature going up to our times, which the essays collected in this book discuss. A new series of “soundings” which provide an intense “listening” experience: listening to texts able to answer, apart from the individual opportunities for critical analysis, to a single request for communication, expression and dialogue, as a defence of those values which have always tied the destiny of man in the world to the word. A dynamic and propulsive synergy of writing and reading which becomes once again a dialogue, trust through literature in a possible human re-qualification: «Because to read, in our times – as Tozzi wrote a century ago and as these essays invite us once again to believe – is especially to exist».
