Abstract In this paper I discuss the divergence between Baltic languages over the denomination for blood. While the Latvian form asins stems from the ancient IE denomination, the type represented by the Lithuanian kraũjas and the Old Prussian crauyo may date back to the age of the individual languages, but may also have been inherited, although it is in any case more recent than asins. Since the latter possibility seems more plausible, we can hypothesize that at some prehistorical stage both denominations of blood must have been simultaneously present, albeit with different functions, in the whole IE area, or at least in part of it. In the Baltic area this pair was preserved unaltered during the common age. Subsequently it underwent, within each individual Batlic language, a process of simplification whose Latvian outcomes were different from the Lithuanian and the Old Prussian ones. If this reconstruction is correct, it follows that all three Baltic areas show an innovative behaviour towards the inherited situation. Riassunto In questo lavoro si discute la divergenza fra le lingue baltiche nella denominazione del sangue. Mentre la forma lettone asins deriva dall’antica denominazione indeuropea, il tipo rappresentato dal lituano kraũjas e dall’antico prussiano crauyo può risalire all’età delle singole lingue, ma può anche essere ereditato, benché sia comunque più recente di asins. Dal momento che la seconda possibilità sembra più verosimile, possiamo ipotizzare che in una determinata fase preistorica entrambe le denominazioni del sangue siano state simultaneamente presenti, benché con diverse funzioni, in tutta l’area indeuropea o almeno in parte di essa. In area baltica questa coppia sarebbe stata conservata inalterata durante il periodo comune. Successivamente, all’interno delle singole lingue baltiche, sarebbe avvenuto un processo di semplificazione il cui risultato in lettone sarebbe stato diverso da quello del lituano e del prussiano. Se questa ricostruzione è corretta, ne consegue che tutte e tre le aree baltiche mostrano un comportamento innovativo rispetto alla situazione ereditata.
