Abstract

I resti della fortezza-residenza di Macheronte (Qalat el Mishnaqa), nota soprattutto per il racconto di Giuseppe Flavio della decapitazione di Giovanni Battista ordinata da Erode Antipa, occupano tutta la sommità di una montagna che fa da spartiacque a due profondi wadi, a venti km da madaba e a sei dalla sponda orientale del Mar Morto. La riscoperta moderna del palazzo è dovuta a U. Seetzen che la visitò nel 1807. La storia recente della fortezza è legata agli scavi del Vardaman, alla fine degli anni ’60 del XX secolo e, soprattutto, a quelli che lo Studium Biblicum Franciscanum ha effettuato dal 1978.. Nel 1991 è stato presentato il progetto di conservazione e valorizzazione del sito “Machaerus: plan for restauration, Maintenance and Tourist Development”.
