Plutarco, La fortuna

Abstract

This paper devoted to the tyche and interpreted as an adaptation of Plutarch to the Stoic principles, reveals itself to a more careful reading as a polemical response to the attack led by the Stoa right to freedom and human responsibility. This new interpretation that brings back the liability of human behavior to education, is confirmed by a contemporary author as Alexander of Aphrodisias, the " second Aristotle", argumentative with the Stoic doctrine of tyche according to which everything in life happens according to natural and unchangeable connection of causes and effects that deprive the human being of moral responsibility for his actions. In the introduction the first part (pp. 9-54) is devoted to guidelines for a uniform interpretation of plutarchean ethics that takes into account Moralia and Vitae; the second part (pp. 55-79) deals with the philosophical interpretation of the writing, while the third part (pp. 80-122) is focused on the Textüberlieferung of Moralia in general and on this paper in particular. The edition is based on a review of all the independent representatives of the tradition. The re-collation of manuscripts has improved the text mainly by eliminating many inaccuracies from the apparatus starting from the editio princeps of Aldus Manutius up to those of the modern publishers. The detailed commentary to the text (pp. 147-242) more than to give an account of proposed changes to the text provides a detailed analysis of those concepts founding the plutarchean ethics.
