Abstract

The Medina of Tunis has been known for centuries as an important center of Muslim civilization and culture in North Africa. Its urban fabric, built environment, and architectural patterns are the manifestation of a creative and dynamic process in which the environment has had an important effect on the planning of the city. The scale of each urban component varies, but the whole participates organically in defining a functional structure. This paper aims to explore the concept of burial sites and their architectural-urban relationships with a focus on the medina during the Hafside period.
