Abstract

The spaces occupied by hunter-gatherer populations have been characterized at times as “natural” landscapes, barely transformed by human activities in the past and where the material record presents an apparent invisibility. This paper takes a spatial analysis in the locality of Punta Medanosa, which is an observed sector with a continuous distribution of archaeological materials with high visibility. The hunter-gatherer populations that lived there would have made an intense use of the coastal space and resources available in the area. The material remains of human behavior that are part of the archaeological record are a constituent part of the landscape which has been extensively modified by social activities. Here we present the results of analyzes of surface archaeological contexts that shape the landscape archeology of the locality. We identified structural, compositional and spatial characteristics of shellmiddens, as well as geomorphological and environmental characteristics that make up this landscape. From the analysis of recorded information it is possible to identify a spatial pattern of distribution of sites in the landscape, as well as structural and compositional variability, and taphonomic alterations that are directly related to the visibility of the sites.
