Satellite Bus Design Using Multidisciplinary Design Optimization

Abstract

In recent times, the engineering design of spacecraft has enormously progressed and we now have extremely precise techniques to assess its optimal solution or architecture. This project extends an existing software package for mission design and architecture developed at Cornell's SEAK Lab and consists of improving the design agents responsible for the communications and the electrical power subsystems. With my contribution, these agents can now use first-order physics-based equations to select the appropriate subsystem components to meet all the mission requirements as well as estimate mass, size and cost of the whole subsystems with higher fidelity. These power and communications subsystem modules are later combined with the other subsystem modules such as ADCS, structures, avionics or thermal developed by the lab using two different kinds of MDO architectures, Multidisciplinary Feasible (MDF) and Collaborative Optimization (CO), to optimize the design of a satellite defined by a large number of design variables and affected by highly coupled disciplines.

Currently, large space organizations such as NASA and ESA have concurrent design facilities where they conduct rapid mission design exercises to assess the cost, value and feasibility of multiple mission concepts in a relatively short time (a few days to a few weeks). The goal of this project is to extend an existing software package for mission design and architecture developed at Cornell's SEAK LAB to address some of its current limitations. The software, written in Java, JESS, and Matlab, implements the MADKIT multi-agent framework, in which different agents are charged
