Abstract

The article discusses the Greek historical epitomes from the 4th century BC to the end of the ancient world. The impoverishment of this literary typology in the Greek sphere, after the end of the Roman Republic, is traced to a number of concomitant factors: the lower artistic quality, in the eyes of scholars of the imperial age, of contemporary historical writings compared to those of the past; the westward shift of political and cultural power caused by the rise of Rome; the progressive impoverishment of historiographical summaries, which forced late empire scholars to abandon the form of the epitome to pour what remained of ancient knowledge into encyclopedic lexica and chronographic repertories.
