Is sarcopene obesitas een specifiek type van obesitas ?

Abstract

We spreken over sarcopene obesitas als een persoon zowel een te grote vetmassa als een afwijking van de spiermassa en/of -functie vertoont. Voor dat hybride fenotype, waarvan lang werd gedacht dat het eigen was aan het ouder worden, is er nu meer aandacht omdat het aanzienlijke klinische gevolgen heeft. Mensen met dit fenomeen zijn kwetsbaarder voor metabole, cardiovasculaire en functionele complicaties, die erger zijn dan die van obesitas of sarcopenie afzonderlijk. Helaas bestaat er geen consensus over de diagnostische criteria voor dit fenomeen, waardoor het moeilijker is om het op te sporen in de klinische praktijk en gerichte behandelingsstrategieën op te zetten. In dit artikel geven we een overzicht van de huidige kennis over sarcopene obesitas, en hebben we het over de pathofysiologische grondslagen, de diagnostische methoden en de principes van de behandeling.
