The Agoranomoi in the Hellenistic Southern Levant

Abstract

The aim of this work is to re-analyze agoranomia in Hellenistic time in Southern Syria and to give some new perspectives about its place in society and its relationship with Seleucid’s power. The collection of sources mentioning agoranomoi, which in Southern Syria are mainly the civic weights produced by this official, will be the starting point of our analysis. This research will later give us the opportunity to carry out a prosopographical and onomastic analysis in order to detect possible points of interest regarding the people who occupied this office, such as their origin. At the end of this study, we will turn to the definition of agoranomia in Southern Syria, trying to specify its nature and duties through comparison with Northern Syria, which was also under Seleucid control, in order to emphasize and demonstrate the influence that the latter had on the emergence and development of this office. We shall also attempt to demonstrate a wider range of tasks reserved for this official, some even unseen in comparison with the rest of the Greek world. Our analysis will focus primarily on political and economic issues such as the representation of power, hellenisation and city revenues in relation to the agoranomia, with the aim of illustrating how the agoranomos was a major player in the social landscape of Southern Syrians cities in the second century BC.
