Abstract

La Cappadocia offriva una particolare variante di vita per gli stiliti, che non sceglievano la sommità delle colonne per vivere in solitudine, ma la sommità dei coni naturali che caratterizzano il paesaggio. Restano le testimonianze degli eremitaggi del monaco Niceta nella valle di Kizilcukur e del monaco Simeone nell'eremitaggio nella valle di Pasabagi. In entrambi i casi cicli pittori testimoniano la vivacità della cultura pittorica in ambito monastico. I dipinti della "chiesa dell'uva" a Kizilcukur sono databili intorno al VII secolo; quelli della chiesa di Pasabagi, orami poco leggibili, sono riferibili al X secolo presentano l'unico ciclo della vita di Simeone Stilita accompagnato da legende secondo la storia di sant'Antonio e attestano che la versione latina della Vita era ben nota in Oriente.
