Abstract

L’histoire de France peine encore, notamment dans les grands récits et les synthèses, à sortir d’un récit qu’on pourrait dire « internaliste », dans lequel les seules formes d’explication et de contextualisation mobilisées relèvent d’évolutions, de focales, d’institutions, de cohérences internes, prises dans le territoire national et son archéologie. En dépit de nombreuses invitations à prendre la mesure de tous les acteurs, toutes les dynamiques et toutes les territorialités autres que « nationales » qui ont pu contribuer à l’histoire de France, celle-ci reste marquée par ce qu’il est convenu d’appeler un « nationalisme méthodologique », quand nombre d’historiens d’autres pays, comme la Grande-Bretagne, les États-Unis ou l’Allemagne ont déjà expérimenté avec profit une telle ouverture.
