The present study examines the cognitive and sociocultural processes that underpin the formation of false memories, with a specific focus on the role of honor-related cognitive schemas in the processing of gender-related misinformation within the context of Turkish society. This research builds on established frameworks, such as the Source Monitoring Framework and Fuzzy-Trace Theory, to investigate the role of cultural values, especially those related to honor, in the cognitive processes of memory distortion. The thesis comprises two principal studies that examine the impact of honor schema activation on the recollection of misinformation, with a particular focus on the dimensions of confidence, vividness and emotional valence in participants' memories. In light of the substantial evidence in the literature indicating that cognitive schemas and political or social worldviews can influence memory formation, the findings suggest that honor schema activation did not significantly enhance false memory formation, particularly in contexts involving abstract and impersonal stimuli. However, the results indicate that individual differences, such as gender perception and cognitive reflection, influenced emotional responses to misinformation. These findings highlight the complexity of cognitive and cultural interactions in memory formation and suggest that further research is needed to explore how deeply personal or emotionally charged stimuli might engage honor-based schemas more effectively. This thesis makes a contribution to the growing body of research on misinformation, memory distortion, and the interplay of cultural values in cognitive processes.
