Una de las mayores y más frecuentes dificultades en el estudio científico de los mitos la constituye su contaminación espacial y temporal. El mito es esencialmente adaptación, por lo que suele actualizarse o modernizarse. Los mitos pueden tener orígenes monogenéticos o poligenéticos, estos últimos suelen tener una motivación psicológica. En muchos casos el mito probablemente tiene su origen en un acontecer, material o no, bien concreto y natural. En ese sentido, puede decirse que la naturaleza precede al mito.
