Abstract

Hilary of Poitiers devotes very little of his works to reflections on the Virgin’s role in the history of salvation. Nevertheless, he endows Mary with a particular relevance insofar as she contributes to the human birth of the Son. Indeed, according to this thinker, Jesus assumed the flesh of the Virgin for himself, even though she did not create his body, but rather contributed to its development and birth. Thus, Hilary holds that although Jesus was conceived by the Spirit, it was Mary who endowed him with his humanity, which was similar to that of the rest of mankind with the exception of sin, which was alien to him on account of his virgin birth.
