Mosaics of Early Byzantine Church B in Paphlagonian Hadrianoupolis and Their Iconographic Analysis

Abstract

In this paper, mosaics of Early Byzantine Church B and iconographic analysis of these mosaics located in Paphlagonia Hadrianoupolis in Eskipazar district in Karabuk city of Turkey’s Western Black Sea region are examined. Church B has floor mosaics dating to two different phases, initially, first half of the 6th century A.D. and latter, beginning of the 7th century A.D. The first phase mosaic has an unique place among Anatolian mosaics with its geometrical designs, figurative ornaments and manifacture quality. The Rivers of Paradise scene treated in a rectangular panel located in the naos of the church, is a sig- nificant subject which is particularly seen in Early Byzantine Period. The Rivers of Paradise scene and the other figurative scenes are predominantly handled subjects by us. Besides, identification of the rest of the mosaic patterns, evaluation and comparison with similar examples throughout various cities are tried to be thoroughly explained. We sincerely hope that, this article would be a humble example for the idetification, classification and comparison criteria which have not been yet settled properly by the native researchers; and for the significant iconographic matters which are mostly passed over with short reviews in the research field of Anatolian mosaics.
