ABSTRACT Scholastic theology has got an exepted place in the formation and development of the islamic thought among the Islamic sciences. Scholastic theology, which originated from the qur'an, has been conveyed tous in various schools in a historical period, Maturidism and Ash'arisim are the most important of those section schools. The thought of "kesb" occupies a significant place in the problems argued by the theological moventes. That is why we examined Abu al-Hasan al-Ash'ari's views about "kesb" who is considered the founder of Ash'arism. Our study consists of three parts. In the introduction we shortly took up the life and works of al- Ash' arı, who has an important place in the Islamic theology, so that our study could have the reguired integrity. In the first section we tried to analyze the concept "kesb" philologically and to examine its usages in the qur'an and the other concepts connected with it. In the second section we took up al-Ash'ari's "kesb doctrine'1 while doing this, we gave the views of the leading theological schools about "kesb" and the concepts of "irada" and "gudra" that are the preparing elements of "kesb" and tried to evaluate them by comparing with that of ai-Ash'ari. In the third section we tried to evaluate "kesb" from the angle of the qur'an and examine the history of "kesb."

ÖZET İslâmî ilimler içerisinde kelâm ilmi, İslâm düşüncesinin oluşumu ve gelişmesinde müstesna bir yere sahiptir. Kur'an kaynaklı olarak doğan ve gelişen, kelâm ilmi tarihi süreç içerisinde farklı ekoller şeklinde bize kadar intikal etmiştir. Mâtûridilik ve Eş'arîlik bu ekollerin en önemlilerindendir. Kelâm ekollerinin tartıştığı meseleler içerisinde "kesb" düşüncesi önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Bundan dolayı biz de Eş'arîyye'nin kurucusu sayılan Ebu'l-Hasan el-Eş'ari'nin "kesb" konusundaki görüşlerini ele alarak inceledik. Çalışmamız giriş ve üç bölümden meydana gelmektedir. Giriş bölümünde, İslâm kelâmında önemli bir yeri olan el-Eş'arî'nin, bütünlük arz etmesi açısından hayatını ve eserlerini kısaca ele aldık. Birinci bölümde, "kesb" lafzının filolojik tahlili, "kesb" ile bağlantılı kavramları ve Kur'an'da kullanımını ele alarak incelemeğe çalıştık. İkinci bölümde, el-Eş'ari'nin "Kesb Doktrini"nin den bahsettik. Bunu yaparken belli başlı kelâm ekollerinin "kesb" ve "kesb"i hazırlayan unsurlardan olan "irâde" ve "kudret" kavramları hakkındaki görüşlerini verip, el-Eş'arî ile mukayeselerini yaparak, değerlendirmeye çalıştık. Üçüncü bölümde ise, "kesb" kavramının Kur'an açısından değerlendirilmesini ve "kesb" in tarihçesini incelemeğe gayret ettik.
