Authentic tasks for online learning

Abstract

Abstract: This paper describes the use of authentic tasks to promote meaningful learning using online delivery. The impact on student learning and curriculum are discussed with particular emphasis directed to strategies able assist students to construct knowledge. The paper describes a specific example of authentic task development in the health sciences involving the integration of research evidence with professional practice knowledge. Students use novel software that guides searching and critical appraisal to develop critical review reports of research evidence addressing topics of priority. The process used is particularly useful for the contemporary online environment as it promotes the continual updating of research evidence with professional knowledge.The final stage of the process involves the online publishing and peer review of these reports. The paper concludes with a discussion of the experience of students who have participated in the authentic task completion and consideration of wider applications of this teaching and learning approach.
