Following contribution builds on collaborative curatorial projects Branka Benčić (Croatia) and Lorena Tadorni (Italy) have developed in the past five years connecting curating over the borders of curator’s native countries, respectively Croatia and Italy – and is regarding curating international contemporary art exhibitions Risque d’attente and Clueless. Geometry of misunderstanding. Although Italy and Croatia have a record of established relations throughout the 20th century, as well as during more distant historical trajectories over past centuries sharing a cultural context, language and tradition, when we look up at the current positions in contemporary artistic and curatorial exchange in the timeframe of past 20 years, we may notice that such relationships have somehow grew apart. Exhibitions Risque d’attente and Clueless. Geometry of misunderstanding include emerging Italian and Croatian contemporary artists grouping them together in international framework of contemporary artists that deal with common social, cultural and aesthetic aspects. In this way exhibitions are producing a new social environment for active work on meanings, stories, history and functions of cultural material.

Il testo che segue nasce dalle esperienze e dai progetti di collaborazione italiana e croata che portiamo avanti come curatrici da ormai cinque anni. Si tratta delle mostre internazionali di arte contemporanea Risque d’attente e Clueless. Inconcludenze quotidiane, come modello espositivo che coinvolge artisti di differenti nazionalità, che è stato e resta nel nostro percorso una priorità per evitare il format delle mostre concepite in chiave nazionalistica e i modelli pragmatici di scambi bilaterali al livello nazionale. Le mostre nascono infatti dalla necessità e volontà di promuovere il lavoro dei più interessanti nomi della giovane arte, spaziando da video, a fotografia, a disegno, che affrontano urgenze e tematiche del vissuto in maniera eterogenea. Con questo approccio, le mostre hanno l'intenzione di lavorare su un format che raggruppa funzioni sociali e culturali, configurando l'esposizione come una forma di comunicazione fatta di aspetti culturali ed estetici comuni.
