Sanguineti’s “travesty” of Sei personaggi in cerca d’autore makes patent the hidden theme of incest in the Pirandellian play, thereby stressing the Sicilian dramatist’s role as the “destroyer of bourgeois ideological standards”. However, this is not an explicit unmasking, but rather the implicit goal of an intricate network of quotations and cultural references within a typically ‘Sanguinetian’ erotisation of literature to the second power. Incest is thus a grotesque operation of education-corruption, drawing on metalinguistic disquisitions, poetic quotations (Eliot) and fragments of pop culture, images from the history of art (Balthus, Dalí), erotic iconography, Tarot figures and the Marquis de Sade’s libertine philosophy. This network composes a mosaic of high and low cultural references, merging with explicit psychoanalytical readings of the plot, which is re-staged through quotations of, and variations on, Pirandello’s source text.
