Abstract

Due to their abundance the squids are the most important marine molluscs exploited in the Uruguayan waters. The shortfinned squid Illex argentinus is the principal resource of cephalopods in the area. Even though the fishery technology for squid is not the proper one, the catches of the Uruguayan Off-shore Fleet using bottom trawl for hake show the existence of a considerable biomass of cephalopods. These considerations added to the easy access to the fishing grounds and the duration of the fishing season lead to the development of a squid fishery. Therefore. the 1980 researeh programm of INAPE included an integral study of the squid exploitation as a first step towards the development of a squid fishery. This paper presents the results of a study on fishery technology for squid Illex argentinus in Uruguay. It is one of three technica1 reports on the topie written by the author. The other two cover production and marketing of squid in Uruguay and biological aspects of the squid Illex argentinus, respectively.
