Restabelecer a memória fragmentada: exemplo de arquitetura popular

Abstract

This research develops an intervention project in a building representative of rural architecture, with the aim of addressing the emerging theme of reflection on the different ways of intervening in vernacular constructions, specifically part of a rural heritage, whose interventions are often subject to uninformed modifications, devoid of any sensitivity about their specificities, compromising identity characteristics and their historical value. The case study is a farmhouse belonging to the Caniços family, located in a rural parish on the outskirts of Braga city centre, the first record of which dates back to the 17th century. Given this situation, the project aims to reflect on how to intervene in buildings of this type, taking into account the current constraints of the case study, which is simultaneously inhabited and in partial disuse, with structural weaknesses and at odds with current comfort standards. The work is based on a theoretical component of knowledge of the object and the place, followed by a practical component that develops the project. The process began with in-depth fieldwork, measurements and analyses of the building’s components and its context, followed by an analysis methodology that recognises identity issues and general and particular characteristics of the case study context. In this way, the problems and opportunities to intervene were determined, which will respond to a new programme. Ultimately, it is expected that the ensemble will be able to be reformulated using various systems that incorporate narratives of identity and memory, culminating in the adaptation of an existing building to a contemporary use. The aim is a response that seeks to reverse the process of de-characterisation, with an in-depth study that focuses on its identity traits, place, form and memory.
