Experiências adversas na infância e maquiavelismo: o efeito do crescimento pós-traumático

Abstract

The impact of adverse childhood experiences on adult psychological development is a central topic in contemporary research. This study aimed to explore the relationship between childhood trauma, Machiavellianism and posttraumatic growth (PTG), as well as to assess the mediating role of PTG between trauma and Machiavellian traits. A total of 218 participants completed na online questionnaire, which included the Mach-IV scale — validated for the Portuguese population in this study — the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire – Short Form (CTQ-SF), and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory – Short Form (PTGI-SF). Confirmatory factor analysis of the Mach-IV revealed na adjusted two-factor structure after removing six items, with moderate internal consistency. Results showed a significant positive association between childhood trauma and Machiavellianism. Conversely, no significant association was found between trauma and PTG, although the physical neglect subscale predicted PTG. Mediation analysis indicated that PTG partially mediates the relationship between physical neglect and Machiavellianism. These findings highlight the complexity of adaptive and maladaptive responses to early trauma and underscore the need for interventions that foster psychological growth following adverse experiences.
