Abstract

[Excerto] Existem várias definições de Biotecnologia. Um documento da European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions refere a existência de 41 (quarenta e uma!) definições no seio da União Europeia. A Federação Europeia de Biotecnologia propõe a seguinte definição: “Biotecnologia é a integração das Ciências Naturais e das Ciências de Engenharia com vista à aplicação industrial de organismos, células, partes destas e análogos moleculares para a obtenção de produtos e serviços.” De acordo com a ONU, Biotecnologia enquadra qualquer aplicação tecnológica que utilize sistemas biológicos, organismos vivos, ou seus derivados, para fabricar ou modificar produtos ou processos para utilização específica. Exemplos de processos biotecnológicos incluem a utilização de microrganismos (fermentos, bactérias, etc.), e/ou enzimas, na síntese de compostos químicos intracelulares (proteínas) ou extracelulares (antibióticos, álcool), na produção de biomassa (fermento de padeiro), de alimentos (bebidas), de energia (biogás, etanol) ou ainda a despoluição biológica de efluentes (degradação da matéria poluente pelos microrganismos).
