Carmen Miranda como signo cultural. Do Estado Novo ao movimento Tropicália, ao “Brasil de Bolsonaro”

Abstract

Carmen Miranda continua ainda hoje a ser motivo de debate sobre auten- ticidade cultural e estereótipos, causando respostas ambivalentes à sua personagem. Este artigo tem como objetivo estabelecer desvios e analogias entre leituras que foram feitas da sua imagem como signo cultural em três contextos históricos diferentes, nomeadamente durante o Estado Novo, o movimento Tropicália, e pelo Brasil da atualidade. Serão discutidas as abor- dagens que foram feitas pelo regime ditatorial de Gertúlio Vargas à carreira de Carmen Miranda nos Estados Unidos da América e a posterior resposta desta às mesmas por via da sua música, interpretações feitas nos finais dos anos 60, nomeadamente por Caetano Veloso, e como ele transmitiu essas leituras ao seu público, e, finalmente, como Carmen Miranda foi mais uma vez revisitada durante a campanha para as eleições presidenciais no Brasil em 2018 através do filme Tragam-me a Cabeça de Carmen Miranda de Felipe Bragança e Catarina Wallenstein.
