Abstract

A encefalite letárgica é apontada como um dos grandes enigmas do século XX. Trata-se de um transtorno neuro-psíquico, que pode resultar de uma infeção aguda provocada por agentes virais ou bacterianos, manifestando-se através de uma grande variedade de sintomas, entre os quais se destacam as perturbações no sono, movimentos anormais e alterações neuro-psíquicas. Entre 1918 e 1920, o mundo sofreu os efeitos da gripe pneumónica, que rapidamente assumiu proporções pandémicas, potenciadas pelo contexto de guerra, ceifando inúmeras vidas, cuja contabilização ainda hoje não está fechada, mas que se estima que terão oscilado entre os 50 e os 100 milhões . A História tem demonstrado que, ao contrário de outras doenças, como a peste bubónica ou a varíola, que se propagam de forma lenta, a gripe, apesar de menos letal, alastra mais rapidamente, sendo bem mais difícil de controlar. No entanto, as marcas da pneumónica não se restringiram ao elevado número de mortos que provocou, mas incluíram também o rol de consequências nefastas nas áreas económica e social, entre outras, que se juntaram aos efeitos da guerra, e se prolongaram pelos anos seguintes.
