Autoeficácia e estratégias parentais para controlo de peso em crianças com excesso de peso

Abstract

O excesso de peso é um problema que afeta crianças e adolescentes no mundo ocidental, contudo, pouco se sabe em relação às estratégias utilizadas pelos pais para ajudar as crianças a perder peso. O propósito deste estudo foi avaliar as estratégias levadas a cabo pelos pais e a perceção de sucesso e de autoeficácia destes relativamente à alimentação e à atividade física (AF) dos filhos. Participaram no estudo 664 pais de crianças entre os 6 e 12 anos (M = 8.37; DP = 1.70). Os participantes preencheram uma versão adaptada para pais do NoHow Weight Management Survey e o Parental Self- Efficacy for Healthy Dietary and Physical Activity Behaviors Scale. Sessenta e sete crianças (10.09%) foram identificadas pelos pais como apresentando problemas de peso. Porém, de acordo com o IMC avaliado, 212 (32.1%) apresentaram excesso de peso. As estratégias parentais utilizadas envolveram consumir mais frutas e vegetais, beber mais água e aumentar AF. Apenas 18.7% se sentiram bem-sucedidos em fazer os filhos perderem peso. Os resultados parecem indicar que seria benéfico para os pais apoio extra. Ajudar as crianças a perder peso pode ser uma tarefa complexa e a maioria dos pais sente que os seus esforços não são bem-sucedidos.
