Abstract

Autores como Hermann Melville, Fialho de Almeida e Bernardo Soares ilustram o processo de mutação semântica do conceito de idiota que se opera no século XIX, abrindo a porta a modernas interpretações desta figura obsidiante do imaginário colectivo. Se etimologicamente a palavra idiota apresenta uma dupla valência semântica, remetendo o grego “idios” para o cidadão comum, privado, para aquele que não é um homem público (um magistrado) enquanto o “idiotus” latino designa o homem sem instrução, o iletrado, esta ambivalência de sentidos manter-se-á até oitocentos, momento em que a acepção mais sombria, socialmente segregadora, se acentua, ditando o resvalar do conceito de idiotia para o domínio da patologia e em especial da doença mental. Estudos científicos vindos a lume na segunda metade do século XIX, no domínio da neurologia, da psiquiatria e da criminologia, serviriam de ponte de ligação e de movência semântica entre a idiotia, a loucura e o génio. É esta deslocação semântica, social e literária que o texto pretende analisar nos três autores referidos.
