Abstract

A Esclerose Múltipla é uma doença inflamatória autoimune que origina desmielinização multifocal e dano axonal. Dentro dos domínios cognitivos afetados nesta patologia, a velocidade de processamento é um dos défices cognitivos primários cujos mecanismos neuronais permanecem indeterminados. Com este estudo de série de casos, procurou-se avaliar a eficácia do treino cognitivo focado na velocidade de processamento em oito pacientes com Esclerose Múltipla Recidivante-Remitente. Os participantes foram distribuídos, aleatoriamente e em número equitativo, em dois tipos de intervenção: treino cognitivo e psicoeducação. Todos eles foram avaliados, através da aquisição de imagens funcionais durante a realização da tarefa Symbol Digit Modalities Test modified, antes e após os programas de intervenção. Os resultados evidenciaram que o treino cognitivo estava associado a uma ativação consistente da circunvolução précentral, do córtex visual e das regiões frontoparietais. Contudo, também foi observada alguma heterogeneidade em termos de ativação cerebral e nos testes comportamentais, o que sugere que fatores como a fadiga ou a escolaridade podem estar associadas aos diferentes resultados.
