Abstract

[Excerto] A história dos videojogos, pela sua génese e dependência tecnológicas, tem sido habitualmente traçada por comparação com a história da informática. Contudo, se nos distanciarmos do processo evolutivo e técnico do meio e atendermos aos momentoschave do seu passado, facilmente encontraremos relações com os movimentos e tensões de ordem cultural, económica e social de cada época. Desde logo, o primeiro jogo a funcionar num computador digital, “Spacewar!” (1962), desenvolvido num DEC PDP-1, no Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT), aponta para problemas específicos daquele período, nomeadamente a corrida às armas dos EUA e da URSS num contexto de Guerra Fria. Em “Spacewar!” simulava-se, num tubo de raios catódicos, um combate entre duas naves espaciais, o que para o diretor criativo da Atari, Paul Steed, “Era um reflexo da época. Existia toda uma paranóia com os russos, um medo dos comunistas atacarem. O jogo atingia assim diretamente o inconsciente coletivo, que dizia ‘temos medo, a guerra pode começar a qualquer momento’”. Longe de constituir um meio neutro, como é a opinião de muitos, os videojogos têm dialogado, implícita ou explicitamente, desde os seus primórdios, com as mais diversas esferas sociais.
