This review describes briefly the recent developments in enzymatic degradation of cellulose by fungi: 1) chemistry and structure of cellulose; 2) cellulosic materials, and their pre-treatments, as substrates for enzymatic degradation; 3) characterization of the wood-rotting; 4) characterization of fungal cellulases and, 5) enzymatic mechanisms involved in the degradation of cellulose.
