Abstract

Conventional asphalt mixtures are widely used in Brazilian pavement surfaces. However, the appearing of fatigue cracking and rutting has made evident the need of developing advanced research involving new mixtures and the use of new materials. In this way, the use of asphalt mixtures using asphalt modified with rubber from used tires, which have proved to improve the mechanical and structural characteristics of pavements, has become an appropriate alternative. This paper presents a pavement design for a medium-trafficked road by making a structural comparative life performance between an asphalt rubber mixture and a conventional mixture. The mixture with asphalt rubber was gap graded and the conventional mixture was produced following Grade "C" of DNIT. The conventional asphalt used was CAP-50/70 and the asphalt rubber was produced through the wet process, type terminal blend. The two asphalts were tested through conventional tests (penetration, softening point and viscosity), besides the resilience test for modified asphalts. Complex modulus and fatigue tests were accomplished with 4-point bending equipment, in controlled strain. The pavement design was carried out by the BISAR 3.0 program. The results obtained showed that the mixture with asphalt rubber presented a better performance, reaching a superior long-term life.
