Arquitectura doméstica em Bracara Augusta

Abstract

O objectivo deste trabalho foi estudar a arquitectura doméstica de Bracara Augusta, tendo por base um conjunto de sete zonas arqueológicas, identificadas e escavadas no âmbito do “Projecto de Bracara Augusta”. Ao longo das últimas três décadas foi reunido um significativo acervo de dados arqueológicos que, apesar de desiguais quanto ao volume e qualidade de informação, possibilitam a reconstituição da evolução urbanística de Bracara Augusta e a caracterização de alguns dos seus edifícios e quarteirões. A nossa abordagem limitou-se à análise de um único tipo de casa, a domus, uma vez que o registo arqueológico não forneceu, até ao momento, qualquer outro tipo de estrutura habitacional urbana. Procurámos contextualizar este tipo de casa romana, analisar as suas diferentes partes orgânicas e evidenciar as suas especificidades formais, construtivas e funcionais, uma vez que a arquitectura urbana privada constitui o resultado da adaptação dos modelos itálicos aos distintos constrangimentos regionais, designadamente, de carácter geográfico, económico e cultural. A nossa amostragem permitiu-nos reconhecer que as domus de Bracara Augusta assumiram três variantes principais, representadas pelas casas de átrio e peristilo, casas de peristilo e casas de pátio porticado, cujas fundações datam do século I, verificando-se a sua utilização ininterrupta, com remodelações, por vezes significativas, até uma fase tardia.
