As consequências a nível da saúde psicológica da participação na guerra do Afeganistão e Iraque

Abstract

A guerra por si só é uma experiência potencialmente traumática. A participação de militares em situações de combate submete-os a um desgaste físico, emocional e mental, em que os actos de violência observados e perpetrados estão muitas das vezes na origem de problemas mentais e físicos a médio e longo prazo. Nos últimos 9 anos de guerra no Afeganistão e no Iraque, tem-se observado uma preocupação das entidades norte-americanas e inglesas em avaliar os militares regressados da guerra. Nesse âmbito, procederam-se a várias investigações com o objectivo de avaliar a ocorrência e persistência de perturbações mentais entre os militares. Neste artigo é apresentada uma revisão de várias investigações que avaliaram a exposição a combate e o desenvolvimento de perturbações mentais como a Perturbação de Stress Pós-Traumático (PTSD).
