A vida dos manuais escolares: processos de renovação dos manuais de Língua Portuguesa

Abstract

Textbooks are books that are intentionally made to support the teaching and learning process and therefore, they are important objects in the structure of the pedagogic language, in the contents of the texts and even in the way it is transmitted. The textbook is an extremely complex instrument with its own status, with multiple functions, which has caused expansion not only in this field but also in the problematic investigations. With this research we intend to identify the processes of renovation – change or maintenance places- of two groups of textbooks, corresponding not only to a different moment in time but also to a different curriculum. The first one, edited in 1991/1992, was created having its basis the law by decree no. 286/89 and the second one edited in 2002/2003, appeared due to the circular letter no. 2/2003. This comparative study focused in the analysis of aspects such as organization, the essential components and the graphic aspects of the textbooks. After analyzing these textbooks, we concluded that the narrative text is the one that prevails in the textbook. Due to this it has been given more receptivity to the juvenile contemporaneous gender in the Portuguese lesson. If the authors of this literary gender were rarely cited in the textbooks of 1991/1992, in the ones of 2002/2003 they are frequently cited. On the other hand, it’s visible that some activities have changed, giving more emphasis to written and spoken activities than to reading activities. Nevertheless, it is too earlier to talk about a radical redefinition of texts, of activities and of the authors read because we can see that a few changes have taken place in the textbooks. However, it is possible to affirm that it is mainly in the form – and not in the contentsthat the textbooks have been changing. In ten years, the Portuguese textbooks show more sophisticated and actual images because publishing houses are giving more importance to appelative colours and illustrations in the textbooks.

Os manuais escolares são livros produzidos deliberadamente para servir de suporte ao processo de ensino-aprendizagem e, por isso mesmo, são objectos estruturantes da prática pedagógica, dos seus conteúdos e mesmo das suas formas de transmissão. São um instrumento extremamente complexo, com um estatuto muito próprio, uma multiplicidade de funções, o que tem impulsionado e expandido o campo e as problemáticas de investigação. Com este estudo pretendemos identificar os processos de renovação - lugares de manutenção ou mudança - de dois grupos de manuais, correspondentes a momentos temporais e curriculares diferentes. O primeiro grupo, editado em 1991/1992, teve por base o Decreto-Lei n.º 286/89 e o segundo, publicado em 2002/2003, fê-lo em resposta à Circular n.º 2/2003. Este estudo comparativo centrou-se na análise de aspectos como a organização, as componentes essenciais dos manuais e os aspectos gráficos. Depois de analisados estes projectos, concluímos que continua a ser o texto narrativo que predomina no manual, mas que há uma maior abertura da aula de Português ao género juvenil contemporâneo. Se nos manuais de 1991/1992 os autores deste género literário eram esporadicamente citados, nos de 2002/2003, estes acabam por cimentar o seu lugar. Por outro lado, é visível uma reconceptualização das actividades, já que há uma diminuição das actividades de leitura e um aumento das de escrita e oralidade. No entanto, será precipitado falar numa redefinição radical ao nível dos textos, das actividades e dos autores lidos, porque são mais visíveis lugares de continuidade do que de mudança. No entanto é-nos possível afirmar que é sobretudo na forma – e não no conteúdo - que os manuais mais têm mudado. Passados dez anos, os livros de Português apresentam imagens mais sofisticadas e actuais, principalmente porque há uma aposta, por parte das editoras, em cores e ilustrações mais coloridas e apelativas.
