Abstract

The current internship report was written as an integral component of the Prática de Ensino Supervisionado (PES) of the 2nd year of the Preschool Education and Teaching of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education’s Master's Degree at Minho University. This document contains a critical account of the Action-Research project carried out. The internship report goals aim to demonstrate the importance of the object book in the development of reading habits and promote a meaningful relationship with books and literature. The intervention and research components were carried out in a preschool setting, with a group of nineteen children, and in a primary school setting, with a class of twenty-six third-year students. Initially, the adopted methodology consisted of participant observation focused on understanding the children's interests, needs, and difficulties, while analysing the guiding documents and respecting the educational intentions of the cooperating teachers. In this way, the research was guided by the principles of the Action-Research methodology - cyclical processes of observation, planning, actions, and reflections, as well as through various data collection instruments. The purpose of these activities was to meet the children's interests and needs. Therefore, the books selected were chosen to encourage a deeper engagement with different types of objects book, fostering a closer connection with literature. With this in mind, and having concluded the research, the main findings indicate that, nowadays, these initiatives are essential, as the number of children who demonstrate reading habits has been declining.
