Stroke produces impairments, disabilities and handicap. At each level attention may be directed at methods of assessment, monitoring or predicting outcome, and evaluating effects of treatment. There has been a change in emphasis from impairment to disability and handicap. The most informative research has been directed at evaluating rehabilitation effectiveness.
