Amastristen zırhlı Hadrian Torsosu: Tipoloji ve ikonografi

Abstract

On October 20, 1993, during the infrastructure works of the new industrial site in Amasra district center, Kum District, Bedesten location, 4 marble statues were found, the heads of which have not survived to the present day. The statues were moved to the Amasra Museum after a nine-day rescue excavation under the supervision of Amasra Museum Directorate experts. The most magnificent among these high-quality sculptures is the "Armored Emperor Torso", which is also the subject of our study. The aim of the study is to reveal the typological and iconographic foundations of the schematic program with propaganda content applied in the breastplate, pteryges and statue support sections of the torso, and to clarify the definition and dating of the torso. In this context, it was determined that the torso belonged to the Roman Emperor Publius Aelius Traianus Hadrianus (24 January 76 - 10 July 138). It has been understood that the pictorial program implemented especially on the breastplate of the torso was used as a propaganda tool, "in the most basic terms, representing the inseparable integrity of the Roman and Hellenic worlds." However, it has been observed that many side messages are intended to be given within the program in question. These messages were confirmed by examining other sculptures produced under the same program.
