Abstract

Dans les Mémoires d’outre-tombe, Chateaubriand évoque en ces termes le dialogue qu’établissent entre eux les grands écrivains : « Est-il rien de plus admirable que cette société d’illustres égaux se révélant les uns aux autres par des signes, se saluant et s’entretenant ensemble dans une langue d’eux seuls comprise ? ». Ce beau passage pourrait servir d’exergue à ce deuxième tome du Dictionnaire Chateaubriand qui, présentant des entrées sur les lectures de l’écrivain, ainsi que sur certains de ses lecteurs, se propose d’apporter un double éclairage. D’un côté, il vise à repérer, parmi les innombrables sources que Chateaubriand cite dans sa vaste production, celles où il a davantage puisé pour ses emprunts, ou qui ont effectivement compté pour lui en tant que modèles pour des résurgences poétiques, en constituant le tissu intertextuel de ses chefs-d’œuvre. De l’autre, ce volume interroge les interprétations marquantes du rôle de Chateaubriand dans les lettres françaises (de Hugo à Proust, de Flaubert à Barthes), ainsi que son rayonnement international, en donnant la mesure de la complexité et du succès de son œuvre à travers sa réception pendant plus de deux siècles.
