Abstract

Nate in territori di frontiera tra la città e la campagna, le borgate realizzate dall’Istituto Case Popolari dalla seconda metà degli anni Trenta hanno conservato nel processo di espansione urbana una loro distinta identità e sono oggi tra i luoghi più affascinanti e vitali della periferia romana. Seppur afflitte da profondi problemi, nonché prigioniere di antichi e mai del tutto sopiti pregiudizi, appaiono come isole dalle qualità e dalle risorse inaspettate nella “marea” urbanizzata della capitale. La bassa densità, la generosità degli spazi aperti e il loro rapporto misurato con il costruito, sono i caratteri distintivi delle borgate “ufficiali”, risultato di una fertile sperimentazione sulla città in grado di riallacciarsi sia alla tradizione italiana del disegno urbano sia alle ricerche più avanzate del Movimento Moderno. La vicenda delle borgate si intreccia inoltre con le vicissitudini delle persone che hanno attraversato e popolato Roma, nonché con la storia della formazione della sua vasta periferia. Tra stratificazioni e paesaggi urbani in continua evoluzione, a questa realtà ci si può accostare ancora oggi in termini di scoperta.
