Abstract

Il rapporto a grande scala tra villa Adriana, Aniene e Tivoli – con i resti romani delle ville, dei santuari e Villa d'Este – è chiaro se si osserva il carattere del suolo, col costone continuo che termina col Colle Ripoli, chiamato Costacalda, che protegge villa Adriana, «indubbiamente una villa invernale, adatta per una persona anziana e cagionevole». Il costone fa da spalla a un sistema trasversale di dossi stretti e allungati, separati da fossi, che, come dita di una mano, tende verso l'Aniene. Il fiume all'altezza di Tivoli ruota quasi di 90 gradi e casca impetuoso, mentre scorre poi con calma a valle. Aniene, costone e dossi configurano un sistema orografico quasi ortogonale, confermato nel tempo dalla topografia e dal sistema insediativo: ruderi romani, Canopo, giardini di Villa d'Este e, fino agli anni Cinquanta, anche il sistema di orti tra Tivoli e grandi fabbriche, hanno le stesse direzioni. Nella carta delle curve di livello è perfino possibile identificare Pecile e Canopo in due pianori, uno incassato, l'altro affacciato sul terreno.
