Una storia a respiro binario

Abstract

La visione “binaria” della realtà storico economica (e sociale) ha messo da parte, come vetusti e fuori moda, gli studi condotti in passato sulla formazione dei mercati, oggetto privilegiato, se non esclusivo, di indagine storica per rintracciare germi dell’economia di mercato e del capitalismo pre- e industriale, o di quelli che altre storiografie indicavano sotto la categoria della «modernizzazione», o della «secolarizzazione». L’asse interpretativo è passato dai sistemi di produzione, posti al centro dell’economia classica da Smith a Ricardo e da Mill a Marx, allo scambio e al commercio dell’economia moderna. Ma anche lo scambio non è considerato l’elemento essenziale dell’economia in quanto l’elemento fondamentale è rappresentato dalla concorrenza. Lo scambio e il mercato svolgono una funzione ancillare rispetto ad essa, e solo – come vedremo – purché ci sia concorrenza, o as if ci sia (si parla allora di “contendibilità”, concorrenza in potenza).
